The Mistakes many Visitors make when visiting us

Thinking that our area isn’t very rural.

In fact we have a charming patch of countryside which includes the fag end of the limestone ridge that makes up the Peak District and unexpectedly rises for its final flourish just near to us around Whitwick. From Curbar Edge to Sherwood Forest to this picture at Bradgate Park (below) is typical of the unspoilt land on our doorstep.

Missing the Melbourne Festival Art & Architecture Trail 17 - 18th September 2022 .

This is a brilliant walkabout event that comes around each September just for one weekend. Over 100 Artists & Makers exhibiting some of Derbyshire’s best creative work in private gardens, halls and churches in the heart of Melbourne. There’s something for everyone with art to enjoy, art to challenge you and art you just have to take home accompanied by live music at Busk Stops, family fun at the Vicarage, classic cars at Melbourne Hall and fantastic food around the trail in our food courts and Melbourne’s fantastic restaurants, cafes and bars.

There’s no great Food & Drink hereabouts!

Wrong!

Melbourne, just 3 miles from us, is rapidly developing into a foodie enclave. To mention just three places is unfair to many others in the town but, to give you a hint, if you just have time to visit one of the following, then don’t miss out from one of these:

The Bay Tree - a local institution and as consistently good today as it was 20 years ago.

Amalfi White - a modern, stylish Italian brasserie with cocktail bar and a lovely garden.

The Posh Off Licence - an off licence yes but so much more. It sells esoteric spirits, hard-to-find wines, and doubles up as a cafe and pizzeria.

Driving up from the South on the M1/M42 on a Friday evening is a doodle - not!

We witness each Friday evening worn out and tetchy guests who have battled their way through the motorway network on a Friday. Instead why not wait, if you can’t get away earlier, and arrive at midnight?

If you tell us first, we are very happy to wait up for you* if given enough notice. Book a supper stop en route too and make it a pleasant journey rather than the misery it so often is. * applies to B&B only.

Not realising we have 2 nationally recognised ‘Best Walks’ in our area.

Breedon ~ Melbourne Circular Walk

Kedleston Park Long Walk

Our location is very convenient for more National Trust / Historic England properties within an hours’ drive than almost anywhere else in the country.

Eg. major houses open to the public, by car, from Breedon (traffic excepted)

Calke Abbey - 10 mins

Sudbury Hall - 32 mins

Kedleston Hall - 35 mins

Hardwick Hall - 46 mins

Chatsworth - 45 mins

Shugborough Hall - 1 hr 2 mins

Belton House - 1 hr 10 mins

Burghley House - 1 hr 20 mins

That our Derbyshire R.Wye is one of only 2 rivers in the UK that is clean enough to support a wild rainbow trout population?

That Bakewell, the ‘capital’ of the Peak District National Park is only 45 minutes drive away? And in the opposite direction, Stratford upon Avon is 1 hour?

Unaware that we have a top notch Spa on our doorstep: The Breedon Priory Spa.

Not only that but it has a proper restaurant attached (not just rabbit food) and, if you are staying with us, you’ll get a 10% discount off your visit to the spa as well!
